  • No, Dis-Chem Didn’t Create This Ad Mocking Clicks

When the going gets tough, South Africans are prone to taking the piss on social media.

You only need to look at our responses to each lockdown announcement, after a President Ramaphosa 8PM special, to see that it’s become a national coping mechanism.

In the wake of the ongoing Clicks advertising saga, there’s a fair degree of anger, nasty spats on Twitter, and even a woman pulling a gun on EFF members at a shopping mall in Port Elizabeth.

And, as is to be expected, there are memes, jokes, and the odd spattering of fake news.

One image that has done the rounds claims to show a new Dis-Chem advert, poking fun at rival retailer Clicks.

The image was shared on Twitter by a bloke called Brian Adams, asking what people thought of the cheeky dig:

I would have made the dress red, but I suppose it’s a decent, Nando’s-esque approach to the current news cycle.

Just the one problem, in that Dis-Chem, had nothing to do with the advert, which is fake:

TimesLIVE confirmed that Dis-Chem was not behind the advert, and Brian deleted his tweet.

Jokes, he didn’t, choosing instead to leave the tweet, which is fake news, because he was getting retweets and attention.

Then again, you only need to swing past Brian’s Twitter account to see what kind of a bloke he is.

If I worked at Dis-Chem, I would stay well away from having a go at Clicks, especially when you consider that the retailer was recently nailed for charging excessive prices for surgical face masks during a global pandemic.
