McKenzie Defends Job Adverts Giving Preference To Specific Racial Groups

Some argued it was racist, and a few even came out swinging for white women, who were also not invited to submit their applications.

Minister of sport, arts and culture, Gayton McKenzie, has backhanded his critic after receiving objections to his department’s recent job advertisement that gave preference to specific racial groups.

The ad for the position of deputy director of administrative support and coordination in McKenzie’s office stated preference would be given to coloured males, Indian males, white males, coloured females and Indian females.

The advert had social media in a frenzy with many accusing McKenzie of racism for favouring other applicants over black candidates.

McKenzie shot back that he was following the Employment Equity Act to ensure other racial groups are represented, posting on X: “Employment equity, are you saying you have never heard of it? We are making sure all races are represented. There is nothing to be alarmed about. Salute.”

He went on, “I am for all races. When I find other races have been ignored and rarely given job opportunities, it is my duty to fix it. I’m fixing things. I want all races to be represented in the department I lead. Go boil somewhere else.”

“I’m being accused of racism by people who need to look in the mirror.”

Some unions called for his dismissal while others reckoned the best man, or women, should get the job regardless of race. Very few came out swinging for the white ladies, who were also not invited to submit a CV.

We just wish more ministers would sign off with “Salute.”
