Cape Town’s Kloof Nek Road has again been the site of a serious traffic incident involving a minibus taxi, a truck and a sedan. The collision occurred on the steep descent from Signal Hill on Wednesday afternoon, a stretch notorious for its steep downhill and frequent accidents.

In this latest incident, eight people were transported to the hospital with various injuries.

According to an eyewitness who spoke to News24, a taxi wanted to pass a delivery scooter and a truck while another car was coming from the opposite direction, with passengers in the taxi claiming their brakes appeared to fail, causing the driver to lose control.

This accident adds to a troubling pattern of incidents on Kloof Nek Road. Just over a week prior, a tourist bus experienced brake failure on the same descent, colliding with multiple vehicles and a MyCiTi bus stop. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, but several individuals were treated for minor injuries.

Residents and local authorities have raised concerns for ages now about the safety of Kloof Nek Road.

Calls for improved traffic safety measures have gotten desperate following these recent incidents. Proposed interventions include enhanced signage, speed reduction strategies, and better maintenance of the road infrastructure to prevent further accidents.

The City will simply have to do something about Kloof Nek Road to protect both residents and visitors to Cape Town.
