The City of Cape Town has officially resumed its large-scale project to upgrade the Table View beachfront.
Construction has restarted on a number of key developments, including a new pedestrian walkway, enhanced parking facilities, and various infrastructure improvements, following the adoption of a revised project recovery strategy.
The project, which covers a 3km stretch from Dolphin Beach in the south to Bokkomsbaai in the north, experienced major setbacks last year due to performance issues with a previous contractor.
“Unfortunately, the contractor’s performance did not meet our expectations,” said Eddie Andrews, Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment. “As a result, the City terminated the contract in November and moved swiftly to implement a recovery plan.”
The civil works component includes coastal walkways, upgraded ablution facilities, and rehabilitated parking areas — all of which were delayed. However, the City is now moving forward with renewed determination.
“The City is committed to enhancing this popular public space and can assure residents that the project is now progressing with a clear focus and firm timelines,” Andrews said. “We understand the frustration caused by delays and thank the community, local businesses, and visitors for their patience.”
New contractors were appointed in March 2025 under a “phased project structure.” According to Andrews, visible construction work will ramp up significantly this month.
“With reliable contractors in place, residents and visitors will soon see real progress on-site. Every effort is being made to complete the work efficiently, and your continued support is deeply appreciated.”
Initial groundwork has begun at Bokkomsbaai parking and the Marine Drive–Visagie Street junction, with completion of these sections expected by July 2025. The broader construction is anticipated to conclude by November 2026, with most disruptive works finished by April 2026.
Upgrades include:
- Beach Access, Fencing, Stormwater and Bokkomsbaai Parking Area
- Repairs to all beach access points and staircases
- Refurbishment of beachfront timber fencing
- Upgrades to stormwater outlets and retaining structures
- Completion of the Bokkomsbaai parking area
- New parking area at Visagie Street and Marine Drive
- Refurbishment of parking along Beach Boulevard
- Modifications to parking between Marine Circle and Perlemoen Street
- A new 2 km-long, 4 m-wide beachfront walkway from Marine Circle to Perlemoen Street
- Restoration of the existing walkway from Marine Circle to Dolphin Beach
- 3. Ablution Facilities between Shell and Seal Roads
- Conversion of the old tourism office into a second facility south of Marine Circle
- Refurbishment of the Bokkomsbaai ablution block
The City has also completed the dune cordon rehabilitation along the beachfront. According to Andrews, they are now in an “adaptive management phase” focused on stabilising the dunes using vegetation and wind nets.
“This phase is crucial to ensure the long-term sustainability of the beachfront ecosystem,” he explained.
During construction, the beachfront will remain accessible to the public, though active construction zones will be cordoned off for safety. Signage, traffic diversions, and phased implementation will aim to minimise disruption to daily beachgoers and nearby residents.
“We ask that the public continues to support this effort by adhering to signage, keeping dogs on leashes, and using only the designated access paths to the beach,” said Andrews.
This major revitalisation project promises to significantly enhance the recreational, ecological, and tourism value of the Table View beachfront once complete.
