Pussy Riot
In March this year, the Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot were arrested following an unauthorised performance at Moscow’s main Russian Orthodox cathedral. Part of their performance included chanting: “Mother Mary please drive Putin away.” Putin was elected for another term as Russia’s president two weeks later. The case has garnered international attention as a test case for Russia’s tolerance for dissension and freedom of expression.
As it turns out, Russia does not have any tolerance.
Pussy Riot have now been sentenced to two years in prison for “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred.”
