The Sharks versus Melbourne Rebels Super15 rugby match took place on Saturday at King’s Park Stadium in Durban. The home fans were delighted when their team routed the visitors, but a deadly fight broke out after the match.
Brett Williams, former Royal Marine and tourist form the UK was killed in the brawl.
As of yet, no arrests have been made.. Captain Thulani Zwane, Kwazulu-Natal police spokesperson said:
The motive is unknown. Durban Central police are investigating.
Eye witnesses claim that Williams was assaulted as he walked away from a fight at the stadium around 22h00. A group of men followed him and beat him up. Williams sustained sever head wounds, and died.
Brian van Zyl, Sharks CEO said:
We have conducted our internal investigations and are satisfied that our contracted service providers had done everything possible to stop the fight.
Williams was South African-born but moved to Liverpool, England with his family when he was a child.
