Englishman Mark Poulton thought things were just peachy as he was managing Chichester City, a small club from south-east England, against local rivals Redhill in a Sussex Charity Cup match. City ply their trade in the Sussex County League (certainly not one we’d have seen on Supersport).
Poulton’s side were 2-1 up during the second half when he received a phone call. It was one of the club’s directors, a man by the name of Gary Walker. Mr. Walker proceeded to inform Poulton that the club’s directors were sacking him and had voted for his predecessor to take over the management role (bringing a whole new meaning to: effective immediately).
Now, I’ve heard of power trips, but this is something else. Have they no souls? Or are they simply so asinine that they couldn’t wait just half-an-hour to let the poor sod know?
Clearly the directors weren’t even watching the game; else they might have realised that they were actually winning. The club has achieved the unenviable feat of becoming the first to sack their manager by telephone during a match.
Poulton said that he has been inundated with text messages of sympathy. Well you have mine too now, Mr. Poulton.
