Juice. The healthy alternative to fizzy-drinks. Have it when you’re not feeling well, or when tap water isn’t hitting the spot. But is it really the healthiest option? Not according to American obesity expert, Robert Lustig.
Lustig claims that juice is a “poison”. Quick, slap that juice out your kid’s hand. He claims it’s a poison because of all the sugar it contains. Okay, give the juice back. The obesity expert sees sugar as the main culprit for the obesity crisis happening in America, because fruit juice is full of fructose, which is sugar. It also contains no fibre that the fruit itself usually provides.
This may all sound alarming until you understand the context. Some kids in America are downing up to four litres of fruit juice a day. Because it’s “healthy” and because the government welfare programme gives it to them for free.
Additionally, fruit juice never used to be used to quench thirst – this is a new thing. It used to be taken as a vitamin shot for a tiny dose of goodness.
So keep an eye on the amount of juice your family consumes and remember, “too much of a good thing can be bad for you” – this applies to most things – not only juice.
