J.R.R. Tolkien might have imagined it, but it took Danish programmers for us to see it from space. It’s called The Middle-Earth DEM Project and will have fantasy nerds walking their way from the Shire to Mordor in no time.
The project renders Middle Earth on a planetary scale using a terrain modeler called Outerra. The project is still in development, with some places like Mordor modeled as a desert instead of a lava spewing death valley. Eventually developers want to have the project so detailed that you can delve the mines of Moria, screaming “you shall not pass” to your hearts content.
