For years a local doctor from the mining town of Springs, on the East Rand, has been prescribing patients with brain damage a sleeping tablet called Stilnox. In 1999 Dr Wally Nel gave the sleeping tablet to the comatose Louis Viljoen. He awoke from a seven year long coma.
The story of Dr Nel and his use of Stilnox was put to film by his niece, Rina Jooste. The documentary ‘The Man and the Miracle Pill’ premiered at the Jozi Film Festival over the weekend. Dr Nel said Stilnox had woken up 20 patients around the world from a coma.
A recent study showed that 5% of coma patients prescribed Stilnox woke up from a coma. It has been shown that Stilnox increases the blood flow to damaged sections of the brain in brain damaged patients.
