It is still unclear what Putin’s real ambition is in regards to Ukraine, but former United States National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski, claims Putin “wants to rebuild the Soviet Union.”
Putin has previously mentioned that “the collapse of the Soviet Union is the greatest calamity of the 20th century,” and Brzezinski sees Putin’s and Russia’s military involvement in the Crimean peninsula as a step toward rebuilding the USSR. “… Ukraine is the prize. If he can get Ukraine he can have a crack at that undertaking,” says Brzezinski.
Western nations are threatening political and economic sanctions on Russia, for their interference with Ukraine’s sovereignty.
