In what resembles a scene out of Ocean’s Eleven or The Italian Job, some crafty thieves spent their Easter fleecing safe deposit boxes in London’s famed jewellery district. It is believed they may have raided the contents of 300 boxes and made off with jewels that don’t exactly come cheap.
Lewis Malka, a diamond jewellery expert who works in the area, told the Guardian just how well the crooks had done:
From what I understand, it happened over the weekend and it looked like they had come in through the lift shaft and gone into the basement where the safety deposit is.
Most of the people who have got safety deposits there are people in the trade.
I know for a fact that some of my work colleagues have got boxes down there and we are talking about hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pounds in goods.
It is also rumoured that one particularly rare half-cut aqua diamond, valued at £500 000, could have been amongst the stolen items.
Scotland Yard has taken over investigations and initial police reports indicate they believe that heavy cutting equipment was used to gain access to the boxes. This is not the first time the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit has been targeted as a 2003 raid saw £1,5 million worth of goods nabbed.
Really guys, you might want to beef up that security a tad. It’s not a good thing when thieves can take their time over an entire weekend to fleece your customers.
