Frank Buckles – the world’s last living American World War I veteran, has died at the age of 11o.
It is officially the end of an era – the last American World War I veteran has died yesterday. During the war he started out as an ambulance drive, but later rose to the rank of corporal before the war ended.
After the war, Frank Buckles took up a career as a ship’s officer on merchant vessels. But soon after that he returned to the second World War. There he was captured by the Japanese in the Philippines and held prisoner of war for more than three years before he was freed by American troops.
Buckles came to prominence in recent years, in part because of the work of David DeJonge, a Michigan portrait photographer who had undertaken a project to document the last surviving veterans of that war.
