Google has set up the first of its startup-funding offices in Cape Town, under the ‘Umbuno‘ flagship. “Umbono” is isiZulu for ‘vision’ or ‘idea’. Google also showed that it knows how to make a girl feel special, saying it chose Cape Town because the city is in “the process of positioning itself as a hub for innovation and technology”.
The Cape Town offices will be fielding tech idea pitches from various applicants – preferably teams, but individuals are accepted. Successful candidates get six months of office space, up to $50,000 in equity funding, business skills training, and maintain a mentorship program with the guys at Google. All of which sounds awesome.
Applications are live on the Umbono website today, open to all South African residents. The deadline for first round applicants is April 15, 2011, but the website will continue to accept applications past the deadline proper.
