Saru has announced that Port Elizabeth will host the South African leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series for the next four years, starting from the 2011/2012 season. The city of George has hosted the event for the last nine seasons. Good for you, Eastern Cape.
PE emerged the clear winner after a tendering process which was reportedly very competitive – although rumour has it that the Western Cape’s bid was not as outstanding as some of the others. This despite Cape Town being the fan favourite to host the event.
Bidding cities were judged on event hosting capacity, brand building potential for Sevens and Saru, commercial promise and budgetary viability.
This is great news for PE and will bring some much needed excitement to the windy city in December, when the first Port Elizabeth Sevens will be held.
