As soon as I see ‘true-crime’ and ‘doccie’ in the same sentence, I’m generally interested.
Look, I don’t want to become a drug kingpin myself, but there’s no harm in finding out the spicy details of a story that has captured the attention of the American people.
The story of Richard Wershe Jr. has been turned into White Boy Rick, a movie starring Matthew McConaughey, but we’re here to talk about the doccie.
White Boy has already premiered at film festivals, and here’s DFP with those details:
Weaving new interviews with archival footage, Rech made the case that White Boy Rick – a nickname popularized [sic] in media coverage of Detroit’s 1980s drug gangs – was a pawn in a larger story of law enforcement betrayal and police corruption.
Wershe was paroled last year after serving nearly three decades behind bars. He is now incarcerated in Florida for a conviction involving being part of a stolen car ring while in prison. He is set to be released in 2021.
A cautionary tale of when dabbling in dealing goes very, very wrong:
That hairstyle/shirt combo might be a crime, but it looks like there is far more to this story.
Oh, here’s Matthew chatting about his role in the fictional movie:
