Director Ari Aster became a household name after the success of his incredibly creepy, but beautifully made horror film, Hereditary.
His new film, Midsommar, looks like it will be equally successful and just as beautifully made.
It also looks creepy as hell.
The film opens with a tragedy. Dani, played by Florence Pugh, calls her boyfriend Christian after receiving a disturbing email from her sister, worried that something has gone horribly wrong.
That’s the first foreshadowing event of many.
Here’s a little write-up from the trailer:
A young couple travels to Sweden to visit their friend’s rural hometown and attend its mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly descends into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.
There’s also a chap called Mark, who has been dubbed an ‘incessantly vaping dirtbag’, which you might be able to relate to.
The film looks like a winner:
Like The Wicker Man, a film from the 70s that horrified us with small village life and orgiastic pagan rituals, Midsommar seems to fixate on the parts of human nature that are uglier than we like to admit to ourselves.
Midsommar will be in South African theatres from July 26.
