At around lunch time yesterday, two light aircraft travelling from Limpopo to Gauteng’s Rand Airport simply disappeared off the radar. Between 12 and 14 passengers, including some kids, were on board when the planes departed after an airshow in Tzaneen.
Bad weather conditions in Tzaneen have rendered an aerial search for the two Albatross aircraft impossible. Meanwhile rescue services have unsuccessfully tried to pick up cell phone signals of passengers on board to locate the planes’ recent or last positions.
Members of the Off Road Rescue Unit and Mountain Club of South Africa have now begun a search on land to solve the mysterious disappearance. Dramatic scenes still to unfold, no doubt. And my thoughts are with the families of the passengers, who must be going through hell right now.
