Screenshots from a Chinese military propaganda video uploaded to YouTube last month reveal a cyberwarfare app designed to make attacks look like they’re coming from any IP address. In the video, the Chinese government can be seen sending attacks from an IP address belonging to the University of Alabama.
To be clear, the video doesn’t display any direct attack on the USA – just that an American university’s IP address is being used as a disguise. The target itself is the main website of Falun Gong, a religious organization that has been suppressed by the Chinese government.
Said Jason Ma, of the New York-based news station New Tang Dynasty Television:
This is the first time we see clearly that one of the top Chinese military universities is doing this research and developing software for cyber-attacks. There’s solid proof of it in this video.
So, you know. Ignore spam from the University of Alabama.
