Geoff Shoults snapped up the award for ‘Best Single Image’ in 2019’s Travel Photographer of the Year Awards, for the stunning shot of a lone traveller in the Scottish Highlands, which you can see above.
The Awards were founded in 2003 and boast a competition that’s ‘for photographers, by photographers’.
It has since become one of the leading travel photography competitions, attracting thousands of entries every year from amateur, semi-pro, and professional photographers.

Divided into four main portfolio sections — the Art of Travel, Endangered Planet, People and Cultures and Thrills and Adventures — and various categories, the annual competition judged by a panel of experts also selects an overall winner that this year was given to the “atmospheric, beautiful, sensitive and diverse black-and-white portfolio of images” by Katy Gomez Catalina, an amateur photographer and veterinarian from Spain.
Here’s the photo that landed Gomez Catalina the top prize:
Now sit back, and armchair travel through our favourite photos from the competition:
If that wasn’t enough to keep you going until your next holiday, you can check out more winners here.
For those who feel sufficiently inspired to plan their next trip, you might want to take note of when the public holidays are happening this year, so that you can make the most of your leave.
Happy travels.
