Disney’s 3D The Lion King reissue has been topping the box offices for the past two weeks, and netted them a cool $22,1 million over a weekend. So it’s not surprising that somebody in the studio realised that, hey, they have a bunch of other well-loved movies that they could probably re-release and make money with too.
We can expect 3D converted classics to be released periodically by Disney over the next two years. The line-up includes Beauty And The Beast (January 2012), Finding Nemo (September 2012), Monsters Inc. (January 2013), and The Little Mermaid (September 2013). All of this will make Disney a lot of money, and in the process give a new generation some talking animals to feel nostalgic over.
So if you were one of those people decrying the re-release of The Lion King as a cynical cash-grab, then you get a gold star or something.
