Genoeg is genoeg is the clear message from the City of Cape Town after launching its anti-extortion campaign to combat crimes related to construction projects.
This comes after a marked increase in incidents at construction sites across the city.
We suppose if you build it, they will come. Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has however had enough, saying that “currently, there are 15 sites that have closed down in the city which raises concerns for the future of the industry and future construction sites”.
The Enough is Enough! Genoeg is Genoeg! Kwanele! initiative was launched yesterday in order to take the fight to the so-called ‘construction mafias’.
As part of the campaign, a 24-hour hotline and reward system has been set up to allow for any anonymous tip-offs to help the City and authorities tackle extortion. These tip-offs will then be shared directly with the police’s anti-extortion unit.
We got all excited until the police were mentioned, but Hill-Lewis insisted that “the only way to stand up for ourselves is to stand together against these criminals.”
“It’s part of Cape Town’s long history of organised crime.”
We launched our city wide anti-extortion campaign in Khayelitsha today 🚨
Extortion attempts are impeding both basic service delivery and major infrastructure projects.

Hopefully, the city’s new plan will help those who want to build instead of destroy, but with crime being better ‘organised’ than most of our attempts to stop it, the mayor has a point about speaking up. It’s not like Cele is going to help anybody, so let’s start standing together and take our future back.
Genoeg is genoeg has become the new national anthem, so let’s all sing it together. Cue the generators.
