The site’s current landing page, in protest of the ruling
It’s been a long road for Fredrik Neij, Peter Sunde and Carl Lundström, the three founders behind the popular file-sharing site, The Pirate Bay. They were sentenced to time in prison in 2009, and although the sentences have been reduced, their final appeal has been lost. This means they are most certainly going to jail on charges of copyright infringement.
Hoping to overturn the ruling, the three filed for a an appeal hearing of their case at the Supreme Court. Today this request was denied, meaning that the sentences as determined by the Court of Appeal are now final.
The group now hopes to appeal to the European Court of Justice, in a last grabbing-at-straws attempt. The chance of leave being granted to do this is slim to none.
The sentencing has no bearing on the existence of thepiratebay.org as a website, as the site is a separate legal entity and was not involved in the proceedings. The world’s most resilient torrent site lives to sail another day.
