Yesterday, news reports surfaced about a schoolboy who was allegedly sexually assaulted with a broom and a banana. The incident took place during an Edgemead High School rugby tour. Even though authorities have opted not to prosecute anyone, Childline is campaigning for legal steps to be taken against the school and the coach who was charge when the alleged events took place.
Childline advocacy and training manager Joan van Nieker:
“The coach – who reportedly turned the victim away when approached for help – should have intervened. And these boys have to suffer the consequences; otherwise they will continue to perpetuate this kind of behaviour in public. The boy’s parents could consider suing the police, the school and the coach. A medical report is not a prerequisite for prosecuting a case of rape.”
