GORDON RAMSAY’S EFFING RESTAUARANT, MAZE, SHUTS THE EFF DOWN IN CAPE TOWN

When Sol Kerzner enlisted the expertise of the man who is arguably the world’s most popular chef, Gordon Ramsay, he would have felt confident that the star food aspect of his monstrous V&A Waterfront hotel, the One and Only, was buttoned tight.

Gordon Effin’ Ramsay opened the five star Maze restaurant at the hotel, but alas, without the mouth-cannon himself in regular attendance at the restaurant (he has a number of other Maze branches dotted across the globe), the masses saw no particularly pressing reason to avail themselves of the establishment’s fine fare.

Combine that with a worldwide recession, and some pretty effing hectic debt, and we have what’s known in the restaurant biz as “closing down”. Bugger, Gord me old mate.

Apparently the One and Only restaurant will slot in its place.

How this man is in debt, I don’t know. It’s certainly not a lack of quality. TV executives from here to Singapore are lining up halfway around the block to do a line off this guy’s sunbed-browned derriere. He’s good at what he does.

Maybe it’s just a case of extending his reach too effin far, gettin his wings clipped by the laws of supply and demand, and all that jazz.

But if you can’t take the heat, Gordon, get the eff outta the kitchen, yeah?

Update: Apparently this story was broken by a Cape-based food blog, Spill, on Friday morning. They’ve got an update on the affair, including the details of the chef likely to take over the mantle from Gordy. Check it out.

Hi Seth, we broke this story on friday morning.
We are a blog based in Cape Town.
Our story was picked by News site Bloomberg, New York which credited us with breaking the story.
Even yesterday’s The Independent credited the
Maze closing down story to us.
Isn’t blogging great for getting the news fast.

    Thanks Clare.

BRILLIANT!! That fuckwit Ramsey deserves the worst. I think the vile carpets at Maze also may have had something to do with it.

I also love how he had to pay a FORTUNE to a really lovely Cape Town lady for the name Maze, as she had established a business called Maze.

    Hee hee.

Guys you have no idea what you are on about gordon is one of the most recognised figures in food circles and we should be proud to have a ramsay restaurant in cape town and to all those people who say it is over priced they have clearly no fucking idea how much effort goes into that type of cuisine and have also clearly never been a restaurant of this calibre anywhere else in the world because it is twice as expensive in places like france and england even if you are living there and earning pounds and euros
We are loosing the best destination restaurant in cape town it is a fucking joke
All the best to jason and gordon and yes I do know them well enough to be on a first name basis

    Neil, your food looks delicious.

Unfortunately, it’s not much of a joke that maze is shutting down. Rather, crippling debt is no joke.

And that’s really the reason why Gordon closed shop. You know as well as anyone that the restaurant biz is a bastard at the best of times. Remember the global economic recession? Ja, we’ve just had one of those. With close to a dozen restaurants under his name, something like this was bound to happen. No one ever denied (at least not yet) that G-dawg was the pre-eminent chef of the world.

And you didn’t have to mention that you’re on first name terms with Gordy. We figured that when you dropped your first eff-bomb. Still, pretty cool.

Spill.co.za here the site that broke the story about Maze closing.
Let’s be very clear Gordon was kicked out.
The One and Only terminated the contact. Gordon didn’t even know it was happening.
Neil you may know Gordon but the fact is the food at Maze was a big problem. i ate there a few times and it wasn’t up to stratch. Infact the last meal I had there was so bad I couldn’t eat it.
Gordon’s future is on TV not in running restaurants. I wrote an open letter to the Gord
on May 9th on spill.co.za check it out. rutrerodon

I have to agree with Clare, I work in tourism and one of the cons of the job is that I spend a fair amount of time in 5* hotels and their restaurants. I had a large group that was staying at the O&O in March this year, and had breakfast at Maze twice and can only say that I’ve had far better in lesser establishments. Just because it’s Gordon’s restaurant does not mean its going to be good!!

And as for Neil we have so many great landmark restaurants in Cape Town that we really dont’ need Gordon Effing Ramsay “right royal rip-off”.
And in case you need me to point out one for you…here you go….

La Colombe, one of Cape Town’s most well-loved and awarded restaurants, has achieved an impressive 12th place in the San Pellegrino 50 Best Restaurants of the World Awards 2010. Having moved up 26 places and into the hallowed Top 20, this bastion of contemporary French-meets-Asian fine dining thereby also clinched the Acqua Panna Best Restaurant in Africa and Middle East Award. Winner of both Chef of the Year and Restaurant of the Year in the Prudential Eat Out Awards 2008, and again honoured with the prestigious Restaurant of the Year title in 2009, La Colombe has also achieved the highest three star rating in both the 2009 and 2010 issues of the acclaimed Rossouw’s Restaurants guide.

Was a great place. Going to miss it (especially Sunday brunches).
Food and service was great. Can’t ever remember it even close to full though.

Kinda swak when people gloat about it closing. Good people lost jobs and stuff.

Restaurants are usually a pretty good indicator of the amount of extra money people have. Makes me think the recession never really ended.
