It’s quite a job to run the Twitter account for the country’s ruling political party in Jozi, and the fact that the ANC Jozi account has sent over 17 000 tweets shows that they’re not taking it easy.
I’m willing to bet that out of those 17 300 tweets few have been as ill-advised as yesterday’s bikini shot though, a tweet the account has since deleted and apologised for.
Thank goodness for screenshots because here’s what you missed:
Well, where to begin. IOL has this:
The picture had been doing the rounds on social media for a few days before the tweet, and the swimwear was associated with the colours of the Jamaican flag instead.
Tweeters responded almost immediately on Wednesday by lambasting the ruling party’s choice of image and words.
@nomorebullSA wrote: “@ANCJHB Your continued lack of respect for women is incredible. They’re our sisters, not campaigning tools for leering old men. Wow!”
Those apology tweets then:
They used the word ‘comrade’ so you know they mean it too. This below from ANC spokesman in Joburg Jolidee Matongo speaking to TimesLive:
[He] said the image had circulated among ANC members via a WhatsApp group. An official posted it on the Twitter account.
“There was no official instruction to post the image. It is not an image of the ANC; the person who posted it did so without instruction,” said Matongo.
“The ANC has a long history of upholding women and respecting women’s rights. We are not about degenerating woman and depicting them as objects. We apologise for the unfortunate incident.”
Matongo also added that the party would launch an investigation into who had posted the image and they ‘would have to face the music’.
In a country with such shocking sexual abuse and rape statistics you would hope they do – this really isn’t a good look.
