Will India’s Commonwealth Games Leave A Legacy?

A similar question has been asked countless times amongst South Africans after we successfully hosted sport's biggest mega-event. India is the second fastest-growing economy in the world and has had to spend £3bn to host the games, 60 times the original budget!

Despite global media hysteria surrounding the “inhospitable” athlete’s village, corruption and collapsing bridges, the Commonwealth Games began in Delhi last night with a memorable opening ceremony, which charted Indian heritage and present-day experience.

While the atmosphere inside the stadium was rapturous, the same cannot be said about surrounding poverty-stricken areas. Now that the fireworks have stopped, will India deliver a truly stellar event that leaves an indelible impression on its people? Reality check.
