Experiment, smoke a joint, have a threesome, get a tattoo… go mad, whatever advice your parents give you, they’ll never be there for you like a roommate. You share some of the best years of your life, living space, body space and on special occasions, each other’s partners. That’s what makes ‘The Roommate’ so intensely scary, it’s all real and as a student you have to spend an entire year with a relative stranger.
Best friends or sworn enemies… there’s a fragile line between friendship and obsession – hanging out between lectures, practice, puffs and in some cases snorts. The “college” experience is definitely worth repeating for most people, but then there are the unfortunate few who wish they could just rewind or forget like Sara in ‘The Roommate’, a chilling psychological thriller about a country girl, who mistakes her deranged college roommate for a friend. Not ideal.

Sara (Minka Kelly), fresh and talented young design student arrives in Los Angeles, eager to start college and discover the big city… yeah right! She charms her new dorm mates – especially her assigned roommate, Rebecca (Leighton Meester), a wealthy girl from Pasadena, who takes Sara under her wing. Their friendship blossoms at first and then starts to deteriorate quite radically as Sara’s social life leaves little time for her obsessive roommate.
Minka Kelly and Leighton Meester – absolutely fine..
‘The Roommate’ features some of Hollywood’s hottest new acting talent including: Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl), Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights), Cam Gigandet (Never Back Down) and Aly Michalka (Easy A). It’s a seriously good-looking cast with heaps of talent and Billy Zane rocking a throwback to ’80s and ’90s thrillers as Professor Roberts. Danish Academy Award nominee, Christian E. Christiansen directs his first All-American feature film, bringing the same raw grit of Life Hits (RÂzone), a film about girl bullies into ‘The Roommate’.
This psychological thriller boasts a beautiful up-and-coming cast of teen angels, girl-on-girl fights and the old school suspense of a ‘Halloween’ slasher, upping the thrills and avoiding CGI wherever possible. ‘The Roommate’ is an edgy roller coaster ride, a great date movie and if you’ve ever had to share a room with a complete stranger – you’ll think twice about doing it again… seriously. Go on, relive your varsity daze… and experience college as a scared little girl on 14 April, 2011.
