A scene from Skoonheid.
Last month we told you about Oliver Hermanus’ Skoonheid – the first Afrikaans feature film ever to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival. This weekend saw the end of the festival with the all-important awards section, and Skoonheid walked away with the Queer Palm Award! It is given to a film that contributes to lesbian, gay, bi or transgender issues. The film tells the story of a married man who is forced to deal with his attraction to other men.
But can I tell you something really sad? We still don’t know if and when South Africans will get to see this film on home soil in as wide a capacity as, say, the last Bakgat film.
Whose fault is this?
Ours.
According to distributors it is a simple case of supply and demand.
