Video footage allegedly showing contracted security guards beating up guests at Sun City has recently been handed over to Cosatu, who plan to march in protest.
Paramedic, Cockroach Khojane (yes that’s his name), was on duty at Sun City when he was drawn to the loading bays at the Valley of the Waves by some unsettling sounds. When he reached the bays he was greeted by a disturbing scene: three Indian males were on the floor with their hands tied and pinned underneath their legs while a number of contracted security guards shocked them with cattle prods.
Khojane jumped into action and whipped out his phone, to record the incident. With the incriminating evidence in hand he chose not to approach the relevant authorities but rather labour union Cosatu.
Apparently the men were being detained and tortured after they were accused of sexually harassing female guests at the Valley of the Waves. Solly Phetoe, Cosatu’s North West provincial secretary understandably asked, “If it was sexual harassment, why didn’t they open a criminal case and call the police?”
Cosatu have decided to take matters into their own hands and will treat it with the utmost severity by marching in protest on Sunday at the luxury resort.
According to the labour union this is not the first time such incidents have occurred, and they claim that several assaults took place over the festive season. Phetoe also said that some of the other incidents involved guests who were burned with cigarettes, and in one case a victim had been dumped naked 15km away from the resort. Cosatu will be meeting with SA Human Rights Commission later in the year to take up the issue.
