It takes a lot to get to the Olympics. Strict training, years of dedication and many, many sacrifices. Especially when you come from a country like Germany, where the competition to make the cut is tough. When you finally make it onto the springboard at the London Games, it must really suck to Feck it up.
I feel the word “schadenfreude” is most appropriate here. It’s a wonderful German loanword, which expresses the pleasure you get from watching the misfortune of another. Seems like a word the Germans would create.
German diver Stephan Feck took to the plank to represent his country in the 3m springboard competition. From a beautiful launch, which was supposed to go into a three and a half forward somersault in the pike position, things went horribly wrong. As he tucked into the turn he lost his grip around his legs, and the rest plays out like a train crash in slow motion.
Trying to correct himself, he fails and ends up back first into the pool in front of an audience of millions. Anyone that knows the pain of a back-whack into the pool must have winched at the sight. To add further insult to his probable injury, every single judge scored him a zero. Nice.
Feck placed last, finishing 29th overall.
