The Iron Dome is a missile defence system built by Israel, with the help of their American friends. Its purpose is to intercept rockets fired into the country from Gaza in the ongoing battle between the two territories.
The Israel military said yesterday that Iron Dome had intercepted 90 out of an estimated 250 rockets fired by militant groups in the Palestinian territory in the previous 24 hours. Successful hits by the interceptor missiles could be seen in palls of smoke high above southern Israel throughout the day. Have a look at the two videos below for footage of what the Iron Dome’s interceptions look like.
Despite all the protection, the rockets from Gaza still managed to kill 22 people in and around Tel Aviv. In response, Israel has already started deploying thousands of troops to the border with Gaza, and a further 30 000 reservists were put on standby for a ground invasion.
