Waiting at  a bar is a drag. Waiting at a bar at one of the world’s most frenetic music festivals, Oppikoppi, is possibly hazardous to your face. Which is obviously why the fine people over at Oppikoppi HQ decided that they needed to utilise the power of robots for good. Enter the Beer Drone, which will make its debut at the 2013 installment of Oppikoppi, titled Bewilderbeest. Nice.

We caught up with this collection of geniuses for the lowdown on the beer drone.

Okay so, how does the Beer Drone actually find the person that ordered it while they’re dancing around in a sandy crowd?

The beer drones will only operate in the campsite. (We are worried that dropping beers in the crowd will get people too excited.)

Have you tested the drone and accounted for wind?

We are busy running tests now.

What happens if someone takes a Castle to the face without ordering one?

Firstly we are not delivering Castles, it’s actually Windhoeks, so that is already a bonus.

Additionally the beer order mechanism on the app requests the fan’s cell phone number. Before delivery it asks the fan if he is ready for delivery and also whether he thinks the conditions are safe for delivery.

This isn’t perfect, but almost nothing at Oppikoppi is. We think it will be fine for most people.

How many booze drones will be on call at the festival?

We wanted to do lots of them, but the drone operators say it is not safe to have many in the air at the same time. We are looking at that now, but will probably start small to be as safe as possible.

How will drunk people who are ordering, pay? Actually, how does anyone pay?

It is a free service this year. If you can get in the queue, you can get a beer.

Will there be a limit to how many beers you can order at a time?

The drone can only carry one beer.

This was actually intended as a fun run-on service but it has now run away with us a bit. We may expand on it, but first we want to see that it’s safe (relatively) and also if people are interested in it, which it looks like they are.

Where did the idea of the Beer Drone come from?

Like most of our best ideas: the bottom of a glass of red wine. We just thought it may be fun to try and incorporate our existing technology with new fun  things, and nobody had delivered beers like this anywhere in the world.

If you want to get in on this action get your behind down to BewilderBeast from 8 to 10 August 2013.
