During a day trip to the Kruger National Park a few weeks ago, Samantha Pittendrigh and friends from the University of Pretoria witnessed an impala jumping into a car to save its life.
While enjoying their game drive the group of students were warned by a passing driver that there were cheetahs in the area. But the group of students could not see anything – only a few birds. Pittendrigh then recalls a herd of impala “going crazy”.
Pittendrigh said:
The cheetahs chased the impala across the road and they disappeared into the bush, but they came back around again.
The cheetahs were on the hunt and one impala in particular was the prize. Just before the cheetahs secured their kill, the impala jumped into the SUV that was parked in front of it. Pittendrigh said:
We heard a loud bang, and then the people in the car started screaming “open the door, open the door”.
And as fast as the impala jumped into the car, it made its exit out the other door. Pittendrigh continued:
I have been to the Kruger a few times and have never seen anything like this before. After that, we were scared one of the cheetahs would jump into our car – you should have heard the language coming out of our mouths.
