The 2013 annual wife-carrying competition has taken place in Sonkajarvi, Finland. The competition was born from the legend of Ronkainen the Robber. To prove your worth, you had to carry large bags of grain or live animals on your back through a set course. To honour the legend some contestants carry other mens wives.
This year’s winning couple was Taisto Miettinen and Kristiina Haapanen, who have won four titles before. Miettinen finished the 253,5m track in one minute and 22 seconds.
Most of the contestants use the ‘Estonian’ method to carry the women around. This entails having the woman wrap her legs around the man’s neck and hang upside down behind him.
