Is the Internet the new TV?

On Thursday House Of Cards become the first online-only series to be nominated for a major Emmy award.

The political drama, starring Kevin Spacey, earned nine nominations including best drama. The series was made exclusively for Netflix, the online streaming website and was uploaded in February for viewing. The 13 episodes that are online have made this groundbreaking achievement, maybe influencing the lack of need for things like DSTV in the future.

Technology industry analyst, Carl Howe of Yankee Group:

It is a watershed moment for video content. We’re now starting to see awards that don’t pay attention to how content is distributed. . . .What the awards people are saying is: We don’t care anymore.

According to BTIG Research, the average Netflix subscriber watches 87 minutes of television on the web a day, which is more than any cable network.

But it this the end to things like cable and DSTV?

Brian Dietz, a spokesman for the National Cable & Telecommunications Association:

A lot of cable customers subscribe to Netflix and Apple TV and other services, and a lot of the data shows that those services are complementary to the cable services. Having the best Netflix experience requires having a robust broadband connection, and cable provides that.
