In 1912, a luxury liner named the Titanic was dubbed the “unsinkable ship”. When it collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic, however, the moniker was proved false. Over 1,500 people died that night (April 15) in those icy waters. People think the story of the Titanic ended there, but it didn’t.

A haunting photograph has been uncovered from the possessions of an officer on board the Mackay Bennett that shows the victims of the disaster being buried at sea. Records show that 166 out of 306 victims’ bodies, which were collected by the Mackay Bennett, were buried at sea, but no images have been seen until now.

The historic photograph, seen below, will go under the hammer next month and is set to sell for over R80,000. Andrew Aldridge, of Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes, Wiltshire, where the snap will go under auction, had this to say,

It has always been said that the process was dignified and organised but piles of bodies are neither of those. The bodies are piled up waist high. This picture shows the dirty side of the business.
