Some people go a little nuts for branded competitions – but this is straying into cry-for-help territory. An unemployed woman in the Eastern Cape was so keen on winning a new Citroen C1 that she sent text messages pretty much all day and all night, spending around R28,000 in airtime, which could justifiably buy a decent 2nd hand car – but the taste of winning was too sweet.

“I sent 300 SMSes during the day and 300 at night,” said Nomandiyephi Botha, from Lady Frere, yesterday. Talk about sore thumbs.

She had just received a cool R11,000 from her stokvel, but employed the servicesof her friends and family to keep the airtime flowing. The competition entailed voting for your favourite presenter on Umhlobo Wenene FM – in this case Botha was dead keen on Saba Mbixane.

“I voted for Saba because I love him and his show. I never miss his show.”

DJ Saba was nominated in the category of Best Traditional Music Radio Programme and Best Traditional DJ. And thanks to her votes, he walked away with both awards for his Lavhutha Ibhayi show, which plays traditional music.

And you know what? Botha actually went and won the car. The Citroen C1 is worth around R130,000.

    Call that a win-win.

For those less eager, why not visit 7Days to see some great deals on new and demo cars.
