The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, otherwise known as the FLDS, is one of the most secretive and mysterious cults in America.
A new television series on TLC is documenting the story of the FLDS through the lives of those few people who have tried, and managed to escape it.
Flora Jessop, one of the stars of the new reality TV show ‘Escaping the Prophet,’ ran away from the church in Colorado City when she was 16, and now works to help rescue other victimized children.
Jessop, now 43, is stoic about her childhood:
A few years ago I walked up to my dad and thanked him for molesting me.
I didn’t thank him because I enjoyed it. I thanked him because I look back on everything I’ve been through, and I decided that I was going to wrap it around me and embrace every memory, every act, all of it, and build myself out of those ashes.
