Paddy Power is adding more fuel to the Pistorius fire with their controversial ad, declaring they will refund all losing bets if Pistorius walks. Last week Paddy Power announced that they are offering the opportunity for people to make bets on the outcome of the trial. Since then there has been an outcry from the public, saying that Paddy Power is trivialising the death of Reeva Steenkamp.
Currently 512 people have signed an online petition to get the advert removed. The petition claims that Paddy Power’s attempt to make money off the trial is a “vile and and offensive act which anyone with a sense of human dignity and respect for human life must reject.”
On Paddy Power’s site they state: “Paddy Power is joining the debate by offering customers an opportunity to put their money where their mouth is — on the outcome of the murder trial.”
We don’t know if we agree that betting on a woman’s death can be said to be “joining the debate.”
