’12 Years a Slave’ might be the talk of the town after winning Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, but back in 1853 interest in the life story of Solomon Northup was just as high. 161 years ago the New York Times did an article on Northup’s experience as a slave. They dedicated an entire page to Northup, summarizing the story of free man being kidnapped and sold into slavery.
