The concept of a ‘baby hatch’ is actually not a uniquely Chinese idea, some European countries literally have a baby hatch where unwanted babies can be dropped off. In America they are called ‘safe surrender sites.’ The Chinese variety is a mixture of the two, basically a tollbooth with a crib in it.
There are 25 of these baby hatches across China. After 260 infants had been left at one of these hatches in Guangzhou, China, since January, the government has temporarily suspended this specific baby hatch. They claim the wellfare home attached to this specific one is over capacity at the moment, and they need time to care for the babies that were submitted.
