15 seconds of fame is so last year; apparently all you need is 7.
Shawn Mendes, who became popular after posting videos of himself playing guitar and singing on Vine, has now reached No. 1 on iTunes within 37 minutes of releasing his debut EP.
Mendes was signed by Island Records after the company spotted him on Vine, and while building up to the release of his EP, he urged his followers to Tweet “#ShawnToNumber1”, and it worked!
“I mean the Vine thing completely misleads you in terms of what is the serious ability that he has,” David Massey, the president of Island Records. “The Vine part of it is the way that he got discovered, as a way that he built a fan base, which is absolutely wonderful, but what the results should send is he’s a serious star, and people are reacting and wanting to be very much part of his journey.”
This kid’s rise to the top seems to have no brakes.
