The Wimbledon runner-up and world number one, Eugenie Bouchard, was asked to “give us a twirl” by a Channel 7 TV commentator at the Australian Open during the post-game interview.
Bouchard gave the audience the twirl, saying “It was very unexpected. I mean, yeah, I don’t know. An old guy asking you to twirl, it was funny”.
As The Telegraph so clearly explains:
The incident immediately provoked a backlash on social media, with fans and pundits pointing out that a male player would never be asked the same question.
The incident has sparked an uproar across the globe.
Weirdly, Serena Williams was also extended the invitation to do to a twirl, “but was reluctant to discuss suggestions of sexism”.
I don’t think and look that deep into it. Life is far too short to focus on that. We have so many other problems we want to deal with that we should focus on. Whether I twirl or not, it’s not the end of the world. It’s about being positive and just moving forward.
Well said, Serena.
Once you have watched the video, you can see that it’s all about their outfits. I don’t think it’s overly sexist. Your thoughts?
