  • Everyone Is Talking About This ‘Creepy’ Thailand Tourism Ad [Video]

This is just a case of mixed interpretations, but I can certainly see where people are coming from when calling this video ‘creepy’ and criticising its ‘stalker-like scenes’.

I’ll give you a little run down of the gist of the eight-minute film, called ‘Love en Route’:

American man goes to Thailand. He sees a Thai woman on Instagram and then tracks her down via her Instagram posts and pictures. Cue him creeping up on her on a beach, whilst messaging her “#Alone!! #need Friend?”. She tells him she has enough friends, but eventually gives in and they tour the country together.

One can understand how this is a bit weird and stalker-ish and why people are not happy with it.

Produced by Thailand’s tourism ministry and the National Federations of Thai Film Associations, the video is intended as a love letter to the country’s sights, sounds and culture while encouraging visitors to share their photos with their social media friends.

But, as News.com.au says, “The campaign highlights the ease at which people can be traced thanks to social media”, which is not something you want to be teaching people (whilst it is good to show people how to be a bit more vigilant).

Jennifer Perry, the CEO of the Digital-Trust which is an abuse charity, spoke to The Independent, warning that “a lot of times it might turn out just fine, but in the world I deal with there are a lot more abusive scary individuals out there than you would think”.

It could be deemed as romantic, a modern day Disney movie, but if you have ever watched that TV show Stalker, you’ll just find it plain old creepy.
