I love a bit of graffiti. We’ve actually got some beautiful pieces in and around the Woodstock Exchange – you should take a walk around the area one day, you’d be amazed. Other graffiti is so good that it has made international headlines and is worth a fortune, a la Banksy. And then there’s this kind of graffiti… the type that is the biggest in the world…

That there is a half mile long landing strip out in California’s Mojave Desert. It is also the sight of Indecline’s latest piece of artwork, or graffiti. In an anonymous interview with Vice, the guys behind the mural slipped a bit of information.

It took them six days of work, over 250 gallons of paint and well over $20 000, but they achieved their goal:

    THIS LAND WAS OUR LAND.

    Why those words, exactly?

When we found this [loactaion], there was too much irony to pass up. That this was a disregarded wasteland of bombs and bullets and military aircraft that’s just rotting away in the middle of nowhere… Relevance. There’s a lot of messages that we have touched on, and I think as we sat around and kinda discussed this, the probability that this would be visible on Google Earth made us want to do something about the earth.

If you ever watched The Addam’s Family movies, you will remember Wednesday and her brother singing the Woody Guthrie song at summer camp for Thanksgiving.

There’s a kind of a message behind that, so we wanted to tie that in to the message that we were all given this earth and we’ve let people take it from us.

    Deep.

On how illegal their graffiti is?

It’s private property, it’s government owned. I suspect it would be treated the same as any other act of vandalism. Probably more harshly given that it’s military.

That’s pretty amazing, if you ask me.
