Load shedding when you’re at work and the day is dragging on – hello old friend, glad to see you again.

Load shedding when your car is parked on the street and getting stripped of all four wheels – Eskom jou ma se…

Table View is currently under siege from criminals who use the darkness to steal car wheels, leaving vehicles stood on nothing more than a bed of bricks. IOL reports:

They tend to strike between 8pm and 10.30pm when load shedding often leaves the neighbourhood pitch black.

…the assumption was that they worked in teams and used a jack to prop up the car on cinder blocks or bricks.

“It’s happening almost every night all around us,” said the area’s Community Policing Forum. “It’s not safe to park on the streets anymore.”

Now this isn’t exactly anything new as last November saw a similar spate in Rondebosch with cars even being stripped of brake discs. You would think parking securely would solve the problem but you would be wrong:

…in some instances, thieves had scaled palisade walls and removed wheels from cars parked in driveways, hoisting the stolen tyres back over onto the street.

For the entire month, there were at least three incidents a week and then it suddenly stopped.

Those in the know suspect that the criminals began to target another area using similar methods. There’s something that will make us sleep easier at night then.

The only way to fight crime together is with a connected neighbourhood. OurHood is building a safer, stronger South Africa with their new platform available on desktop and app. Go to ourhood.co.za and sign up now to communicate in real time with your real neighbours.
