Grace Mugabe Slammed For These Comments About Rape Being The Woman’s Fault

Mrs Mugabe trended on Twitter for all the wrong reasons after she said that women who wear revealing clothes are to blame if they get raped.

Speaking at a Zanu PF rally in Mberengwa on Friday, First Lady Grace Mugabe had some very dated opinions on rape.

If you walk around wearing mini skirts displaying your thighs and inviting men to drool over you, then you want to complain when you have been raped? It’s unfortunate because it will be your fault.

Wear clothes like Mai Mugabe or you can choose a trousers, but not those which are too tight. These types of clothes are the signs of moral decadence in our country.

Of course, rape is a very sensitive topic in the world as many men take advantage of women without thinking of the consequences, viewing the act of rape as a right, privilege or act of power instead of considering that it’s terribly controversial and violent. Grace’s comments then had women’s rights activists and the general public up in arms.

An attorney from the Women’s Legal Centre, Sanja Bornman, said:

To blame a woman’s outfit or what she’s wearing is blaming the victim and that props up rape culture.

And of course, Twitter was the platform where all hell broke loose:
