Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s First Minister, just mentioned that the removal of Scotland from the European Union is “democratically unacceptable”.
She’s not alone there, but it was her announcement of the possibility of a new independence referendum that really caused a stir.
The prospect of a second referendum must be on the table, and it is on the table. We will begin to prepare the legislation required for a new referendum to take place if, and when, Parliament requires.
She then spoke directly to EU citizens living in Scotland, calling it “their home” and that their presence is valued.
A strong 62% of Scotland’s voters opted to “Remain”.
Scotland faces the prospect of being taken the EU against our will and I find that democratically unacceptable…for many people the supposed guarantee of remaining in the EU was a driver for their vote to remain in the UK.
Nicola then went on to say that the Scottish National PArty’s election manifesto allowed for a second referendum in the event of a “significant and material change” – which just happened.
This is set for discussion this afternoon.
Wheels coming off, Britain.
