Fastest Speeds That South Africans Have Been Caught Driving At

It's often tempting to put to your car to the test and max out speed-wise, but I bet you haven't come close to the record holders.

Put pedal to the metal and open this baby up, something many of us have shouted whilst behind the wheel.

The thing is my car maxes out at about 140km/h (on a downhill, with the wind), so I can’t really get up too much of a head of steam.

That’s not the case for all of our road users, because a look at the record speeds we’ve been clocked at shows serious disregard for the rules of the road.

These top speeds below from MyBroadband:

In 2007 on the N2 near Port Shepstone, traffic officers clocked a motorcyclist doing 295km/h – the highest recorded speed at the time.

The man was fined R100,000 after police caught up to him after he stopped his Suzuki GSX-R1100 for a cigarette break…

We should note that the world record is a monster 389 km/h in Texas back in 2003, the driver zooming around the 120 km/h in a Koenigseggs CCR.

Some more top speeds from Jozi and Cape Town then:

The JMPD said they once clocked:

  • A BMW M4 going 234km/h on the N1

The City of Cape Town provided details on its top three incidents:

  • A driver in an Audi going 227km/h
  • A driver in a Mercedes going 222km/h
  • A biker on a Kawasaki going 221km/h

I imagine this has a few of you out there feeling like this:

Just arrive alive and be safe on the roads out there – ain’t nobody got time for putting other people’s lives in danger.
